What is a FFXI Skillchain?

A Skillchain, known in Japanese as Renkei (連携), is a core combat mechanic in Final Fantasy XI. It occurs when two or more party members (or a single, well-geared player) use specific Weapon Skills (WS) in a correct sequence and with proper timing. When executed successfully, this creates a burst of additional, elemental damage on the target. This extra damage is independent of the weapon skills themselves and is a fundamental strategy for maximizing damage output, especially in group content.

Understanding and executing skillchains is crucial for any serious damage dealer. It not only adds significant damage but also opens up the opportunity for mages to perform a “Magic Burst,” where they cast a spell of the same element as the skillchain for massively increased damage. This interplay between melee and magic users is a hallmark of FFXI’s strategic combat. This skillchain calculator ffxi is designed to help you master these combinations.

The FFXI Skillchain Formula and Explanation

There isn’t a single mathematical formula for skillchains. Instead, it’s a system of properties and combinations. Every weapon skill possesses one or more elemental properties. There are eight Level 1 properties and four Level 2 properties. Combining these in a specific order results in a Skillchain. For more advanced strategies, you might want to look at a FFXI Job Guides to see which jobs excel at certain properties.

The basic logic is: Property of WS 1 + Property of WS 2 = Resulting Skillchain.

Skillchain Properties (Units)

Property Level Primary Element Typical Weapon Type
Transfixion 1 Light Piercing (Swords, Daggers, Polearms)
Liquefaction 1 Fire Slashing (Swords, Axes)
Impaction 1 Thunder Blunt (Clubs, Hand-to-Hand)
Reverberation 1 Water Blunt/Piercing (Clubs, Polearms)
Detonation 1 Wind Slashing (Axes, Katanas)
Scission 1 Earth Slashing (Axes, Swords)
Compression 1 Dark Piercing/Blunt (Polearms)
Induration 1 Ice Blunt (Axes, Clubs)
Fusion 2 Fire/Light (Result of Lv1 chains)
Distortion 2 Ice/Water (Result of Lv1 chains)
Fragmentation 2 Wind/Thunder (Result of Lv1 chains)
Gravitation 2 Earth/Dark (Result of Lv1 chains)
The fundamental properties used to create Skillchains. The “units” are these properties.

Practical Examples

Example 1: Creating a Level 2 “Light” Skillchain

A classic and powerful Level 2 Skillchain is Light. It’s formed by combining a Level 2 property (like Fusion) with another Level 2 property. However, it’s more commonly created by a 3-step chain. For a simpler, 2-step version, let’s look at creating its component, Fusion.

  • Input 1 (WS 1): A player uses Burning Blade. This weapon skill has the Liquefaction property.
  • Input 2 (WS 2): A second player quickly follows up with Shining Strike, which has the Impaction property.
  • Result: Liquefaction + Impaction = Fusion (Level 2). The screen flashes with the Fusion animation, and the target takes extra damage.

Example 2: Creating a Level 2 “Distortion” Skillchain

Distortion is another common Level 2 Skillchain, valued for setting up powerful Magic Bursts.

  • Input 1 (WS 1): A player uses Vorpal Blade, which has the Transfixion property.
  • Input 2 (WS 2): The next player uses Fast Blade, which has the Scission property.
  • Result: Transfixion + Scission = Distortion (Level 2). This skillchain deals Water and Ice elemental damage. Learning these is key for any FFXI Leveling Guide.

How to Use This FFXI Skillchain Calculator

Using this skillchain calculator ffxi is straightforward and designed to give you instant results for planning your party’s attack strategy.

  1. Select Opener WS: From the first dropdown menu, “Weapon Skill 1 (Opener),” choose the Weapon Skill that will start the chain. The list shows both the WS name and its weapon type.
  2. Select Closer WS: In the second dropdown, “Weapon Skill 2 (Closer),” select the Weapon Skill that will finish the chain.
  3. View Results: The calculator will instantly update. The “Resulting Skillchain” box will show you the name and level of the skillchain you’ve created. If no skillchain is possible, it will indicate that.
  4. Analyze Properties: The intermediate values show you the exact elemental properties of your selected weapon skills that were used to make the chain.
  5. Reset or Copy: Use the “Reset” button to clear your selections and start over. Use the “Copy Results” button to copy a summary of the skillchain to your clipboard, perfect for sharing with your Linkshell.

Key Factors That Affect FFXI Skillchains

  • Timing: The closing WS must be used within a specific window after the opening WS lands (typically around 6 seconds). Too fast or too slow, and the chain will fail.
  • Weapon Skill Properties: The most critical factor. The properties must be compatible. A WS can have multiple properties (primary, secondary), and the game will try to chain using the highest priority one first.
  • Order Matters: For many combinations, the order is crucial. Transfixion -> Scission creates Distortion, but Scission -> Transfixion does not create a skillchain.
  • Skillchain Levels: Level 1 properties combine to make Level 1 or Level 2 skillchains. Level 2 properties can combine to make Level 2 or Level 3 skillchains (Light/Darkness). This calculator helps visualize these paths.
  • Player/Mob Position: Both weapon skills must land on the target. If the target moves out of range or turns, the WS might miss, breaking the chain.
  • Gear and Stats: While gear doesn’t change the properties, “Skillchain Bonus” gear can directly increase the damage your skillchains inflict, making them even more potent. This is an important part of end-game gearing found in any good FFXI Endgame Guide.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. What is a Level 3 Skillchain?

A Level 3 skillchain is either Light or Darkness. It is formed by combining two different Level 2 properties (e.g., Fusion + Fragmentation = Light). These are the most powerful basic skillchains and enable the highest tier of Magic Bursts.

2. Can I skillchain by myself?

Yes! This is called a self-skillchain. It requires having enough TP for two weapon skills and enough Haste and/or specific job abilities (like a Samurai’s Meditate) to use the second WS before the first one’s property wears off.

3. Why did my skillchain fail?

The most common reasons are incorrect timing (too fast or too slow), an incompatible property combination, or one of the weapon skills missing the target.

4. What are the “units” in this calculator?

The “units” are the elemental properties themselves (Scission, Detonation, etc.). The calculator works by taking the property of your first WS and seeing if the property of the second WS can combine with it.

5. What is a Magic Burst?

Immediately after a skillchain animation, a window opens for a few seconds. If a mage casts a spell whose element matches the skillchain’s element during this window, the spell gets a huge damage and accuracy bonus. This is a critical part of the FFXI Magic Burst Guide.

6. Does the order of weapon skills matter?

Absolutely. As shown in the chart, most Level 2 skillchains are non-reciprocal, meaning WS1 -> WS2 works but WS2 -> WS1 does not. Our skillchain calculator ffxi accounts for this.

7. What about Level 4 skillchains?

Level 4 skillchains (like Radiance and Umbra) are advanced techniques that involve closing a skillchain with a Relic, Mythic, Empyrean, or Aeonic weapon skill under specific conditions, often involving multi-step chains. They are extensions of the Light and Darkness chains.

8. How accurate is this calculator?

This calculator uses the established and verified skillchain combination rules that have been part of FFXI for many years. It accurately calculates all Level 1 and Level 2 skillchains based on the primary properties of the weapon skills.
